Arcade #2 is perhaps our best edition technically speaking.

your computer can not do justice! Oh well, at least you
get a good idea of what it looks like, but wait until you
see it with your own eyes — we

This
is Robert's original Arcade #2 cover, 1975. His new rendition
of the cover (the addition of the alligator at the bottom of
the print) in our edition subtly transforms the illustration
for me.
In the original cover, we're almost forced to sympathize with the bunnies,
and the alligator girl seems menacing and sadistic. But with the inclusion
of the other alligator, who is just hanging out and wallowing in the water,
we're now forced to identify with the alligators too. That's what alligators
do — they wallow in water and they eat animals to live.
|
It's
nothing personal, little bunny. She's not a bad alligator, she
has to live too, doesn't she?
This is the quintessential Crumb illustration: his love for the beauty
of nature; his hatred for the savagery, cruelty and lawlessness of nature
as well; his desire to shock his audience; his love for the round, strong,
imposing (almost frightening) female figure.
It's
all here folks! |
