BULLFINCH by HOKUSAI serigraph print
Katsushika Hokusai (1760-1849) became famous late in his career with his Thirty-Six Views of Mt. Fuji series which was released in 1830. This image, Bullfinch and Weeping Cherry Blossoms, was released in 1834, when Hokusai was 74 years old. Although Hokusai painted the images, the woodcarver, who transferred his line work onto the wooden printing blocks, and the printer (who mixed the colors and printed each edition) had much to do with his success. The woodblock prints of the Ukiyo-e style were truly a collaborative effort between artist, carver and printer.
11 colors (including 2 blends) were used to print this serigraph edition of 200 prints on white paper. The image size is 17" x 24." The white archival paper is 22" x 30." Each print is numbered and titled in pencil.
