In 1992, Crumb drew this illustration of himself (with Dana, his pregnant wife at the time) selling his first underground comic book on the corner of Haight-Ashbury in 1968. Crumb was amused by the story that had developed concerning how the first underground comic book (Zap #1) initially sold–it's not entirely accurate, but here it is, in all its '60's glory. He later reworked and then colored the illustration in 2022, adding an historically accurate building behind the hippies.
The design is printed on a ring spun 100% cotton heavyweight Hanes Beefy-T natural color t-shirt. We wanted something darker than white, but something still light enough where the process inks wouldn't be affected by the dye of the garment. So we chose a natural t-shirt, on which the white works perfectly. This Hanes Beefy-T is very heavy weight but still soft because of the ring spun cotton.
